In January 2000, five companies, Weston Solutions,
Inc., RWE NUKEM Corporation, NFT Incorporated, Horne Engineering
Services, Inc., and Advanced Integrated Management Services,
Inc. (AIMSI) combined their expertise and formed an innovative
and successful waste management company, WESKEM, LLC. In the
same year, Bechtel Jacobs Company LLC (BJC) awarded WESKEM a
$103 million subcontract in Oak Ridge and a $50 million subcontract
at the Paducah Site to conduct all waste management activities
of both sites. Recently, AIMSI sold its interest in WESKEM to
the other member companies.
WESKEM’s scope of work in support of BJC includes:
- radioactive, hazardous, mixed and PCB waste storage
- waste tracking and data management
- facility management, nuclear facility safety evaluation and
compliance, and RCRA permit compliance
- waste characterization and profiling
- waste processing and treatment
- waste packaging, shipment, and disposal
WESKEM has safely managed virtually every type of nuclear and
hazardous waste including spent nuclear fuel (SNF), special nuclear
materials (SNM), shock sensitive materials, contact handled (CH-)
and remote handled transuranic (RH-TRU) waste, mixed waste, low-level
waste, RCRA/TSCA waste, industrial chemical waste and sanitary
wastes.
This proven experience demonstrates broad radioactive waste
management expertise. WESKEM can safely manage virtually any
type of radioactive, hazardous or mixed waste generated by government
or commercial operations. Since fiscal year 2000, WESKEM has
shipped off-site over 30 million kilograms of waste from the
three Oak Ridge Reservation (ORR) operations (East Tennessee
Technology Park, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Y-12 Complex)
and the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant. These wastes have gone
to five different government and commercial treatment and/or
disposal facilities throughout the country.
