WESKEM performed, and continues to
perform as necessary, the unpacking, transportation, and
deactivation of Potentially Shock Sensitive Waste (PSSW) from the
East Tennessee Technology Park (ETTP), Oak Ridge National Laboratory
(X-10), and Y-12 Facilities. The scope of work for managing and
eventually disposing of this very difficult waste stream includes: •
Stage equipment for operations •
Locate and evaluate PSS containers
• Stage and open containers to remove
shock sensitive items • Monitor
the open containers • Remove the
PSS items from the lab-pack containers •
Breeching and stabilization the PSSW items, if necessary •
Over-packing the items and prepare packages for inter-site transfer
• Transport the packages to the
designated deactivation area The Energetic and Reactive Materials (ERM)
Team is comprised of eight fully trained personnel. The ERM Team
follows the direction of the Senior Shock Sensitive Specialists (SSSS).
The ERM team performs the PSSW item removal and deactivation
activities simultaneously. Therefore, the ERM team is divided into
two groups; typically, one group to unpack and transport the items,
and the other group deactivates the PSSW items. The deactivated
items are then repacked and shipped for final disposal.
