In 2003 WESKEM, LLC supported Bechtel
Jacobs Company LLC in the defueling of the Tower Shielding Reactor;
a unique nuclear reactor built in the 1950s to develop the
technology for a nuclear-powered aircraft. While the reactor fuel
has been removed, the 315 feet tall towers will remain in place
until cleanup of the site is completed in 2009. WESKEM prepared a
written waste management plan for the Tower Shielding Facility
reactor components and associated PPE from de-fueling activities. WESKEM provided field support deactivation, packaging support
services, waste containers, and project management to facilitate the
timely removal of all radiological waste from the Tower Shielding
Facility. Waste included but was not limited to the remaining
reactor components (reactor vessel, reactor internals, associated
piping, shield tanks, lead, de-fueling support fixtures located in
the reactor pool, etc.) and the remaining DAW waste generated from
de-fueling activities. All waste was shipped for disposal to
Envirocare of Utah, Clive, Utah. |
