Legacy nuclear or hazardous waste materials are often commingled physically, chemically, or radiologically. Waste materials must be properly segregated to ensure compliance with applicable state and federal regulations, to ensure compliance with treatment, storage and disposal facility (TSDF) waste acceptance criteria, and/or to reduce the cost of transportation, treatment, and disposal.

WESKEM has proven experience classifying, segregating, sizing and packaging many thousands of waste containers involving millions of kilograms of radioactive and hazardous wastes.

Additionally, WESKEM has sorted large volumes of radioactive and hazardous waste to address physical characteristics and size requirements in accordance with the waste acceptance criteria of receiving TSDFs. Sorting and segregation also results in improved packaging efficiencies by increasing packaged density and disposal cost savings.

WESKEM packages wastes in containers that meet all storage and transportation regulations and TSDF requirements. Approved packaging requirements are provided to the WESKEM packaging operators. This practice assures compliant waste packages are generated for storage and/or shipment to the TSDF, avoiding costs due to improper packaging, re-work and delays.

Non-radioactive hazardous and toxic materials are packaged in various container types including lab packs, drums, and boxes of various sizes. Larger quantity waste streams may utilize bulk packages, such as roll off containers, intermodal containers or tankers, in accordance with the applicable section of 49 CFR 173. Only compatible materials are packaged together, depending on U.S. Department of Transportation hazardous class or hazardous waste management and disposal requirements.
