WESKEM has safely shipped over 30 million kilograms of radioactive,
hazardous, and mixed waste during the past three years. These
wastes have included low-level radioactive waste, spent nuclear
fuel, special nuclear material, Resource Conservation and Recovery
Act (RCRA) hazardous waste, Toxic Substance Control Act waste,
mixed waste, and shock sensitive waste. WESKEM has extensive
experience applying all applicable state and federal regulatory
shipping requirements for radioactive and hazardous materials.
WESKEM’s waste shipments have involved virtually every
type of waste container and conveyance including drums, boxes,
bulk containers, and casks transported by both truck and rail.
Each radioactive or hazardous waste generator who transports
these waste materials on public highways, or who delivers these
waste materials to a carrier for transport, shall comply with
the applicable requirements of the Department of Transportation
(DOT) regulations in 49 CFR parts 170 through 189 appropriate
to the mode of transport.
Therefore, waste transported to a treatment, storage and disposal
facility (TSDF) must meet all DOT requirements. The production
of shipping documents; packaging; marking, labeling, and placarding;
and identification of certified carriers are all activities that
must be performed precisely in accordance with DOT regulations.
WESKEM has developed and received approval for over 50 waste
profiles in accordance with TSDF Waste Acceptance Criteria. All
WESKEM transportation documents and shipping activities receive
detailed peer review to ensure compliance with regulatory and
TSDF requirements. Prior to waste transportation, the receiving
TSDF must be notified and provide shipping authorization.
WESKEM ensures that all Nuclear Materials Control and Accountability
requirements are fully addressed for nuclear waste shipments.
WESKEM routinely prepares all necessary documentation to facilitate
transfer of responsibility for nuclear materials between the
originating site and the receiving facility. |
